People always mention students' excitement/moments of clarity as the most gratifying parts of teaching, but I have to say, another big one (though perhaps only the first or second time you teach a class) is realizing you know a subject so well you barely have to prepare.

I guess I learned something in grad school!

Yes, that's a nice feeling, but after a while you'll get bored with it and want to teach something completely new, like I've been doing most of the time because my grad courses didn't cover topics like Business German, Middle High German literature, history of Germany (as a unified course), etc. That's when teaching becomes a great learning experience and you realize just how important learning is for the maintenance of civilization.
